CHINA: Melamine worries Grow as Three Ice Cream Makers Are Closed
Tuesday, February 09, 2010
Worries of a new scandal involving melamine-tainted dairy products prolong to grow, after the Chinese government lock down three ice cream manufacturers for using products laced with the poisonous chemical. The shift comes shortly after officials shut down a few number of dairy firms in the country for selling melamine-tainted milk powder, and after having detained hundreds of tons of tainted products.
Chinese officials said the three firms were all based in the northern region of Liaoning, and recognized them as Liaoning Yachao Foods, Yingkou Aoxue Foods, and Wuzhou Foods. Bureaucrats said they found melamine in about 10 tons of milk powder anticipated for ice cream manufacture at the companies.
