Blue Bell Fruit Special ice cream flavor returns to Dallas-area stores
Monday, March 22, 2010
It's a meek icecream with an ambiguous name Fruit Special. It's pink, of all things. Brenham-based Blue Bell describes the flavor as Tutti-Frutti ice cream with pineapple chunks, maraschino cherries, small marshmallows, and chopped roasted almonds.
According to a July 2009 Harris Poll, chocolate is the most popular ice cream flavor, scoring 27%, followed by vanilla (22%), cookie dough/cookies and cream (22%), butter pecan/Swiss almond (22%), and mint chocolate chip (17%). No Fruit Special.
And yet Fruit Special has been preferred by enough consumers that Blue Bell has revitalized it not once but twice, with the latest re-issue taking place in March 2010.
"It's back for the first time in quite some time, and it's back simply because of popular demand," says Blue Bell spokesman Bill Weiss. "My wife was just telling me the other day that it reminds her of when she was a little girl, and her grandmother always had it in the freezer."
